WHO YOU ARE MATTERS
Hi everyone!
My name is Lauryn Tham and I was born just outside of Chicago, Illinois. My childhood resembled a traditional Chinese-American upbringing, filled with wonderful memories alongside my parents and little sister. In my deepest memories, I remember hot summers and snowy winters, notorious for the unpredictable Midwest weather. In 2015, we made a big move across the country to the sunny Torrance, California -- where I attended high school and community college. Later on, I decided to transfer to USC, with my little sister, where I would complete my Bachelor's and Master’s degrees. I believe that my origins tie fittingly with where I intend to go in life: as many places as possible. Career-wise, I intend to work as a healthcare consultant or in the finance department for a Pharma company for a couple of years to gain corporate experience. Depending on where my evolving interests take me -- I may apply for dental school because I have always had a passion for healthcare. Along the way, I hope to travel all over the world to see as much as I can and meet people from all walks of life. I plan on entering the corporate side of healthcare by networking with as many companies as possible and performing well in my internships. Later in life, if I were to pursue dental school -- I would apply during the summer cycle and utilize my diverse background of experiences in healthcare as my assets. My non-traditional degrees in healthcare and finance can be attributed to my parents' careers. Like my mother, an ICU nurse, I found many interests in health and science, and, on the other hand, like my father, a business operations director, I have a knack for business. Concerning personality, I am a 50/50 split between my parents. Similar to my mother, I am extremely family-oriented, in tune with my emotions, caring, hard-headed, energetic, and understanding. However, like my father, I am friendly, tough-skinned, diplomatic, bored easily, over-confident, and funny. Unlike my parents, I was born in the United States so there are several cultural differences that we have stumbled upon -- like moral values, political views, and life goals. As I have grown older I have developed new expectations for myself the more I realize my potential but I must admit that I have many deeply rooted expectations that stem from my parents. Aside from my family, a role model in my life who lived with great passion and personal responsibility would be Mother Teresa. I believe that a wild animal I feel a special connection with would be a dolphin. Aside from being my favorite animal, I share qualities such as needing to be around family (pods), curious, sociable, playful, and hopefully intelligent as well. A significant encounter I had with a plant in my childhood was when I sat down with my dog to take a nap on the grass in the park and saw my first four-leaf clover – which I still have to this day.

That's so cool that you've been able to find a four-leaf clover. I hope it has served you to be very lucky in the times you most needed it. Ive spent too much time trying to find one out in grassy areas so I've decided to get myself something else as a lucky charm.
ReplyDeleteHi Lauryn! That is so so cool to see how your upbringing and influences from your parents and environment led you to pursue what you want to do! As someone who has also grew up in a traditional Chinese household, I can relate to the similarities and differences you have with your parents. I also find it so endearing how you still have the four-leaf clover that you found to this day.
ReplyDeleteHi Lauryn! Chicago to Torrance is such a big move! Sounds like you had best of both worlds weather wise. Dolphins are one of my favorite animals, I am glad that you feel connected to them. You truly are lucky for finding a four leaf clover, I always wanted to find one as a kid so bad that I would convince myself there were four leaves when in reality there was only ever about 3 or so.
ReplyDeleteThis is the second post I saw today mentioning Dolphins. I never seen any of them in life, looks like I gotta check one out. First time seeing diplomatic being used to describe personality, very curious what that is like, looking forward to learn that side of you.
ReplyDeleteI know you didn't mention it much but I'm always glad when I see people mention that they attended community college before coming to USC. I'm also a CC transfer from Bakersfield College, and I definitely made the right choice as I'm not nearly in as much money trouble as a lot of other people I know who go to USC. I also feel good knowing I'm not the only one who did that, as I can't find many who did the same.
