Name & Mission
Haven Housing
"Our mission is to provide safe, low-cost housing solutions to college students across all California schools. We aim to support students who are facing housing insecurity, domestic violence, hostile living environments, unstable home lives, or financial hardship. Inspired by Trojan Shelter, we will create a support system that offers low-cost housing, free meals, and access to essential resources that will foster a stable academic and personal success environment. Our foundation's future outlook will include being directly affiliated with official student housing committees in California schools."
Passion
I am currently the Director of External Affairs for Trojan Shelter and have been a dedicated member of the organization for 4 years. Trojan Shelter is a University of Southern California registered campus organization that houses college students experiencing homelessness in the greater Los Angeles area. Our organization offers low-cost housing, meals, and resources to its residents. In our space, we offer holistic support for our residents to succeed in college and ultimately find permanent housing after their term as our residents. Unfortunately, we are not officially associated with USC because their board is concerned with tarnishing the university's image. We have influenced UCLA, UC Riverside, and UC Irvine to open up their own shelters, and my dream would be for every California school to have the same resources available to their struggling students.
Unique
- What sets us apart from typical homeless shelters is that we cater to actively enrolled college students and are fully run by other college students.
- Students serve as volunteers, cooking dinner and staying overnight with the residents.
- Residents will be connected to on-campus resources and Haven Housing partners to pursue career opportunities.
- Haven Housing provides social work resources to each of our residents on a need basis.
- 1:1 Meetings with either a graduate student or recent graduate from the University's School of Social Work
- Haven Housing provides a safe and supportive space for its residents. Residents are given a bed and free meals, among other resources.
- Official student resource
